9 Things You'll Learn From Owning Your First Airplane

Most pilots dream of owning their first airplane. Your first ownership will probably seem like a little marriage - With a combination of a honeymoon, consideration of divorce, but everlasting fun that you can't get away from.

So here's what I've learned from co-leasing an airplane with some of my closest friends. If you've owned an airplane you'll relate...

1) You'll drive to the airport with friends and open up the hangar only to find you left the key at home.

2) Arriving to a plane that has your headset, cockpit, and seat set up the way you like it is pretty cool.

3) Flying around by yourself is boring, you'll probably start making a list of people to take flying.

4) Fly-in camping takes on a whole new meaning with your own plane.

5) You need to head 30 minutes out of town and could easily take your car. But why drive when you can fly?

6) If your airplane is older, you might experience a system or instrumentation failure at some point. Dealing with the situation is a great learning experience and will make your pre-flight checks a lot more thorough.

7) Shared ownership is a great way to split the costs with friends if you're just getting into ownership.

8) What's that? Your right brake isn't working like it should? It's now your job to check out the problem.

9) At the end of the day, your first airplane may be rough on the edges... But that doesn't make it any less fun!
